Hong Kong International Airport

“I’m Alex Martin, 32, from Toronto. I’ve accepted an employed consulting role in Shekou. I’m moving on my own, and I want my home to be in the same part of Shenzhen as my office. At Hong Kong Airport, the plan stops being a spreadsheet and starts…

Alex, his workplace and personal arrangements are fictional. Hotel and café photographs provide location context; they do not confirm a membership, his apartment or a particular service.

About this map and its photographs

Approximate WGS84 building or area points, not entrances. The coarse coastline can differ from current reclaimed land. Buildings, blocks, green space and the pale waterfront apron are illustrative. The dotted local shore retains the source coastline; the neighbourhood projection is stretched for legibility. These details do not identify actual street or park alignments. Dashed connections illustrate the sequence of the story; use the transport guides for an actual journey. The office pin identifies a fictional area, not an employer.

Added local discoveries: A locates the Garden City shopping-centre neighbourhood at 1086 Nanhai Avenue, not a treatment shop. B locates Hilton Shenzhen Shekou Nanhai at 1177 Wanghai Road. Alex’s massage provider and exact facial shop are not specified. Coordinates reuse the site’s approximate WGS84 place catalogue; addresses were checked with the property owners. C adds Four Seasons in Futian; D marks the Luohu Commercial City / border neighbourhood, not a parking entrance; E marks Central station area. The Hong Kong connection is illustrative, not the railway alignment. No specific China Mobile Hong Kong shop is marked. Garden City · property owner · Hilton · official location

The places Alex learns by name

A home, a neighbourhood mall and the landmark before a Hong Kong day.

Place notes checked 27 Oct 2026

Home is where the routine begins

Mount Blue

临海揽山御园

“Mount Blue is my base in Shekou. I learn the way from my own gate, find the useful shops and try the journey home after dark. Knowing the building matters more than recognising its name on a map.”

29 Yanshan Road · Zhaoshang, Nanshan
深圳市南山区招商街道沿山路29号

Mount Blue is the English name used for 临海揽山. Shenzhen’s 2022 housing plan records the full project name 临海揽山御园 at 29 Yanshan Road. This is a residential development, rather than a hotel or a visitor attraction.

What Alex checks here
  • Use the actual building and gate for deliveries, pickups and route planning; the map marks the development area.
  • On a viewing, compare light, noise, ventilation, lifts and the route to work at the times you will use them.
  • Ask about management fees, parking and charging arrangements for the specific home. Alex’s RMB 15,000 monthly rent is a fictional example, not a current listing.

An everyday stop, with time for himself

Garden City Mall

花园城

“I get to know the Garden City area through ordinary errands. Near the Walmart landmark, I have a facial for RMB 220. Once the treatment is finished, I can pick up what I need and head back to Mount Blue.”

1086 Nanhai Avenue · Nanshan
深圳市南山区南海大道1086号

Garden City Shopping Centre is a five-storey shopping centre on Nanhai Avenue. Its owner lists basement ancillary facilities and parking. Save the Chinese name and the address: “Garden City” can also appear in the names of nearby residential developments.

What Alex checks here
  • Check the current directory for the shop, floor and opening hours you need. Individual businesses can keep different hours.
  • If driving, check the entrance, tariff and any purchase-based parking validation before staying.
  • The facial is Alex’s personal story: the salon is unnamed, and RMB 220 is his example spend. The map locates the mall area, not a treatment-room entrance.
Read Alex’s facial story →

The car stays in Shenzhen

Luohu Commercial City

罗湖商业城

“Luohu Commercial City becomes my landmark for some Hong Kong days. I park on the Shenzhen side, save the parking level and bay, then walk to Luohu Port. When I come back, finding the car is the easy part.”

25 Guangchang Road · Nanhu, Luohu
深圳市罗湖区南湖街道广场路25号

This shopping complex is in the Luohu border and Shenzhen Railway Station area. The district government records the address as 25 Guangchang Road. Clothing and tailoring are established parts of its retail mix; the local authority’s 2024 review also describes upgrades involving dining and specialty food.

What Alex checks here
  • Before leaving a car, confirm the parking entrance, full-stay charge, access hours and any overnight rules. The map pin is not a car-park entrance.
  • For shopping or tailoring, agree the specification, final price, fitting or collection date and receipt with the individual shop.
  • Luohu Port is the mainland crossing; Lo Wu is the Hong Kong control point and MTR station. This is separate from the high-speed service between Shenzhen North and Hong Kong West Kowloon.
Follow Alex from Luohu to Central →

Another way to spend a Hong Kong day

Alex takes the high-speed train

On a few visits, he swaps the Luohu parking routine for a train from Shenzhen North.

“This time I book from Shenzhen North. I arrive in West Kowloon, finish the formalities and make my way to Central. A different journey gives the same city a different beginning.”
  1. Shenzhen North · 深圳北

Alex checks the exact departure station, train and return booking. He carries the original identity document used for the ticket and allows time for station security and boarding.

  2. Hong Kong West Kowloon · 香港西九龍

This is the high-speed arrival station. He follows the signs for the mainland exit and Hong Kong entry formalities at West Kowloon before continuing into the city.

  3. Kowloon MTR → Hong Kong → Central

After clearance, he uses the pedestrian connection to Kowloon MTR, takes the Tung Chung Line one stop to Hong Kong station, and walks through the connected station passages toward Central. This local transfer is separate from the high-speed ticket.

Alex compares the whole journey from Shekou, not just the minutes on the train. He checks the selected service, fare, border documents and return departure before each outing. The map connects his story stops; it does not draw the railway alignment.

Central, one walk at a time

Once in Central, Alex likes to walk between its landmarks. Some days he follows the heritage streets; other days he finishes by the harbour.

A flexible story walk, not a timed tour. The hillside sections have slopes and steps; the escalator does not replace a step-free route. Alex checks the weather and attraction opening arrangements, takes breaks and can skip a stop.

01 · 中環站

Central MTR

Alex starts at Central, where the Tsuen Wan and Island lines meet. Hong Kong station on the Tung Chung Line is connected by a pedestrian passage.

Official place information ↗

02 · 皇后像廣場

Statue Square

A pause among Central’s towers: Statue Square sits by the Court of Final Appeal and the HSBC Main Building. Alex looks at the buildings from the public square.

Official place information ↗

03 · 聖約翰座堂

St John’s Cathedral

At 4–8 Garden Road, the cathedral gives Alex a quieter architectural stop. It is a working place of worship; he checks visitor access and respects services.

Official place information ↗

04 · 香港公園

Hong Kong Park

Gardens and water features offer a break between Central and Admiralty. Alex checks individual opening times before visiting the aviary, conservatory or Museum of Teaware.

Official place information ↗

05 · 大館

Tai Kwun

The former Central Police Station compound at 10 Hollywood Road now brings together heritage and contemporary art. Alex browses the courtyards and checks the exhibition programme.

Official place information ↗

06 · 元創方

PMQ

At 35 Aberdeen Street, the former Police Married Quarters is now a hub for local design and creativity. Alex browses studios and shops rather than treating it as a conventional mall.

Official place information ↗

07 · 中環至半山自動扶梯

Mid-Levels Escalator

Alex follows part of the Central–Mid-Levels system for the hillside street scenes. This pin is one representative section, not the entire system; direction and operating status vary by time.

Official place information ↗

08 · 中環街市

Central Market

The revitalised former market at 93 Queen’s Road Central / 80 Des Voeux Road Central mixes local shops, food and cultural activity. Alex stops here when he wants a sheltered break.

Official place information ↗

09 · 中環海濱

Central waterfront

Alex ends by Victoria Harbour near Central Pier 7, the Central Star Ferry pier. Watching the green-and-white boats is part of the walk; taking a ferry is an optional extra.

Alex’s Shekou weekends

The little discoveries that make his neighbourhood feel like home.

“Once the practical things start working, I stop measuring the city only in commutes and checklists. A facial, a massage or a long Cantonese lunch becomes a reason to enjoy staying local.”

A facial near Garden City

Garden City Mall / Walmart area · Shekou

RMB 220 for Alex’s facial

“One of my discoveries is a facial place near Walmart, by Garden City Mall in Shekou. I go for a facial that costs me RMB 220. It becomes one of those small appointments that makes this feel like my neighbourhood, rather than somewhere I am still trying to figure out.”

“I fit it around the rest of my day, check what the treatment includes and confirm the price before starting. Then it is back to the ordinary things: a little shopping, something to eat and home to Mount Blue.”

The salon is unnamed. The map marks the Garden City neighbourhood, not a treatment provider or entrance. RMB 220 is Alex’s story price.

“I like getting massages in Shekou as well. After a busy week at the consulting office, I do not always want another long outing. Sometimes I just want to stay close to home, put my phone away for a while and come out feeling ready for a quieter evening.”

“I choose the kind of massage and how long I want before booking, and ask for the total price. It is a local pleasure I leave room for, rather than something that has to happen on a fixed schedule.”

A slow Cantonese weekend at the Hilton

Hilton Shenzhen Shekou Nanhai

Around RMB 200 · tea service extra

“On the weekend, I also like going to Hilton Shenzhen Shekou Nanhai for all-you-can-eat Cantonese food. The meal I go for is around RMB 200, excluding the tea service. I make time for it, order a little at a time and let lunch be the plan.”

“Before going, I check the current weekend dining arrangement and ask what the tea service adds to the bill. I like that a hotel meal, a walk by the water and the journey back to Mount Blue can still feel like a local Shekou day.”

Before following Alex

Hilton lists Sui Xuan for Cantonese cuisine and dim sum at 1177 Wanghai Road. Around RMB 200 is Alex’s approximate story amount, not a verified current hotel promotion. Tea service is excluded; confirm the current weekend menu, availability and full bill with the hotel.

Futian becomes familiar

A Four Seasons membership, a few visits each month

Four Seasons Hotel Shenzhen · 138 Fuhua Third Road, Futian

“I also get a membership at Four Seasons Hotel Shenzhen in Futian. I go a few times a month. It gives me another familiar place beyond Shekou: I can make a hotel visit part of a day in Futian, then head home to Mount Blue without trying to see everything at once.”

“On one visit, I have a massage there and choose a special package for an additional RMB 400. I ask what it includes before agreeing. It is a particular visit and an extra charge, rather than the price of every massage or a benefit I assume is included in the membership.”

The membership example behind Alex’s choice

“A few times, I take the Tesla from Shekou to Luohu Commercial City, near Shenzhen’s Luohu Port, and park there. I leave the car on the Shenzhen side, walk to the crossing and complete the mainland exit and Hong Kong entry checks. On the Hong Kong side, the station is called Lo Wu.”

“Once I reach Central, I leave the day open for a walk, something to eat and whatever brings me over this time. For the journey home I reverse the route, cross back to Shenzhen and collect the car. Hong Kong becomes an occasional day out, with Shekou still my base.”

Practical notes for this route

Luohu is the mainland crossing; Lo Wu is the Hong Kong station and control point. The MTR journey to Central requires a change. Alex checks entry and mainland re-entry documents, parking terms and the last usable crossing/train connection before leaving. No current parking price or journey time is implied.

One more everyday system clicks

A Hong Kong mobile account for both sides

China Mobile Hong Kong · CMHK

“On one Hong Kong visit, I open a mobile account with China Mobile Hong Kong. The plan I choose offers data for Hong Kong and mainland China, with sharing enabled. It saves me from treating every crossing as a completely new phone setup.”

“What I like is being able to share data and keep using my usual online services when I use this Hong Kong connection on the mainland. In my day-to-day experience, that is the ‘unblocked’ connection I wanted. I still check the roaming allowance and sharing conditions on my own plan.”

Alex’s plan and the practical checks

The exact tariff is not named. Cross-border coverage, data sharing or tethering, fair-use limits, speed and supported online services depend on the specific product and roaming connection. “Unblocked” describes Alex’s reported experience; it does not promise unrestricted access or unlimited data on every CMHK plan. Account registration and identification requirements also vary by product.

The Model Y was paid from prior savings. The monthly example has no car loan and includes a replacement reserve. Rent, gym and other amounts are fictional allowances. Deposits, initial rent, hotel, moving and furnishing require separate cash; the sample move-in calculator excludes the car purchase.

Alex discovers Shenzhen

Read Alex’s complete storyTen scenes, practical notes and the guides behind each decision.
1The move starts before the city does

Hong Kong International Airport

“I’m Alex Martin, 32, from Toronto. I’ve accepted an employed consulting role in Shekou. I’m moving on my own, and I want my home to be in the same part of Shenzhen as my office. At Hong Kong Airport, the plan stops being a spreadsheet and starts being real.”

“Before flying, I checked the employment-entry documents with HR and booked a temporary Shekou hotel. My employer and I agreed what still needs doing after arrival. I have the hotel’s Chinese address saved offline, my baggage tags in hand and a qualifying onward ferry connection.”

His decision: a temporary base first; the long lease comes after real viewings.

Practical notes

  • A job offer alone does not authorise work. Alex confirms the required work and residence steps with his employer.
  • The map begins at the airport terminal area; it does not show an arrivals gate or a walking route.
2The ferry makes the move feel real

Shekou Cruise Home Port

“My flight and same-day airside ferry connection qualify, so I follow the E2 Mainland / Macao transfer signs before Hong Kong immigration. I show the baggage tags instead of going to reclaim my bags. This is the connection I checked before flying; I’m not guessing my way onto it.”

“At Shekou, I complete mainland entry, collect the transferred luggage and clear customs. I send the hotel’s saved Chinese address to my phone’s notes again, just to be sure. Shenzhen is no longer the city across the water. It is where I’m going home.”

His decision: use the confirmed airport connection, then go straight to the temporary hotel.

Practical notes

  • For this airside route, stay before Hong Kong immigration and follow staff baggage-transfer instructions. Entering Hong Kong prevents returning to the airside ferry.
  • If a flight or ferry connection is not eligible, check the separate land-transfer options and Hong Kong entry requirements.
3A phone, a payment and an address

Sea World area · temporary base

“At check-in, I confirm that reception registers my stay. Then I do the ordinary things that make a new city feel possible: take my passport to an authorised mobile operator, test calls and SMS, and try a small payment. I keep a backup way to pay.”

“I walk around Sea World rather than rushing into a permanent apartment. I find groceries, save useful addresses in Chinese and try the route to the Shekou office. HR and I work through the remaining formalities. The city begins to feel smaller, one working system at a time.”

His decision: get connected and test the real routine before choosing a home.

Practical notes

  • This pin shows Sea World plaza, not an invented hotel or office address.
  • A mainland SIM is useful; supported foreign numbers and cards can also work with mobile wallets. Verification and product support vary.
4The keys are for Mount Blue

Mount Blue · home in Shekou

“I decide on Mount Blue—临海揽山御园, on Yanshan Road. Before saying yes, I visit the actual apartment by day and evening, test the commute and check the written lease, landlord authority, inventory and total charges. The name of the development is only the beginning of the decision.”

“In this story, my apartment costs ¥15,000 a month. That is my fictional negotiated lease, not a quote for an available unit. I collect the keys, sort utilities and internet, and arrange registration for the new address with the host or landlord. For the first time, I unpack everything.”

His decision: live at Mount Blue and keep his working life in Shekou.

Practical notes

  • Mount Blue is the English name used for 临海揽山御园. The official historical project address is 29 Yanshan Road. The map pin shows the development area, not a gate.
  • For non-hotel accommodation, the foreign guest or host must register within 24 hours of moving in. Confirm the current local process.
5He builds a life around the work

Consulting office · Shekou area

“With the required permissions in place, I start the consulting role. My first client brief is demanding enough; I’m glad that home and work are both in Shekou. I check the payroll bank details, read the payslip and learn where the team goes for lunch.”

“My fictional salary is ¥50,000 gross a month. I plan around an annual-average take-home of about ¥39,500 under the assumptions below. That gives the Mount Blue rent a place in a real budget, along with food, fitness, the car and savings. Gross pay is not the amount I can spend.”

His decision: use take-home pay and real costs, rather than a lifestyle wish list.

Practical notes

  • The employer and exact office are fictional. The marker represents the Shekou area, not a real company address.
  • ¥50,000 is an authored story salary, not a claim about typical consultant pay.
6The Model Y opens up his weekends

Mount Blue · his Tesla Model Y

“I buy a Tesla Model Y. Before making it part of daily life, I sort the mainland driving licence, registration, insurance and parking, and check where I can charge. Living and working in Shekou still lets me walk when that makes sense. Owning a car does not mean taking it everywhere.”

“I paid for the car separately from prior savings. My monthly budget therefore has no loan instalment, but it does include running costs and a replacement reserve. It is the occasional hotel workout or a day out that makes the car feel useful—not the idea of saving a few minutes on every short trip.”

His decision: buy from existing savings, then budget for ownership as well as charging.

Practical notes

  • The story does not imply that an international permit alone permits mainland driving or that buying a car grants plate eligibility.
  • The map connects scenes, not roads. Check a current navigation app for the actual drive, parking entrance and charging availability.
7A change of scene for a workout

Conrad Shenzhen · Qianhai

“I join Waterfall Fitness. For my fictional plan, I confirm the participating facilities I want to use, including Conrad Shenzhen and JW Marriott Hotel Shenzhen Bao’an. I like having a reason to get beyond my normal home-to-office loop.”

“At Conrad in Qianhai, I make the workout the purpose of the trip instead of adding it to an already busy day. Before going, I check the branch access, the reservation rules and what my particular plan includes. A network of clubs is useful only when the access actually works for me.”

His decision: choose and confirm the membership for the places he will actually visit.

Practical notes

  • Conrad Shenzhen is at 5001 Tinghai Avenue, Qianhai.
  • Alex’s selected access is part of this fictional story. It is not a promise that every Waterfall membership includes these hotels; current plans, facilities, reservations and exclusions need confirmation.
8Bao’an becomes part of his routine

JW Marriott Hotel Shenzhen Bao’an

“On another visit I head to JW Marriott Hotel Shenzhen Bao’an. I check the destination and the current parking arrangement before leaving Mount Blue, then use the access I confirmed for my membership. A workout away from my usual neighbourhood makes the weekend feel different without making the plan complicated.”

“I do not need to see the whole city at once. I learn a few places properly, keep the return journey simple and leave time to enjoy being there. The Tesla helps with the outing; the routine is what makes me keep doing it.”

His decision: a manageable outing, with the return trip planned too.

Practical notes

  • The hotel is at 8 Baoxing Road, Bao’an. Marriott lists Waterfall Spa & Wellness on its official facilities page.
  • A hotel facility listing is separate from Alex’s membership terms. Check the current access and reservations for your own plan.
9At GG GAGA, he can just relax

gaga · G&G Creative Community, Shekou

“I like going to gaga at G&G in Shekou. I find the restaurant nice and friendly. After a busy consulting day, it is somewhere I can sit down, enjoy a meal and feel comfortable without having to turn the evening into a big plan.”

“That is one of the small things that makes the move work for me: a place I choose because I enjoy being there. Mount Blue is close enough to keep Shekou as my everyday base, and a friendly restaurant gives me another reason to like coming back to the neighbourhood.”

His decision: keep a few friendly local favourites, rather than chase a new place every evening.

Practical notes

  • The branch is gaga at G&G Creative Community, 9 Liyuan Road, Shekou. The pin is approximate; check the branch and entrance before going.
  • “Nice and friendly” is Alex’s personal view within the fictional story, not an independent restaurant review.
10The city starts to feel like his

Back home · Mount Blue, Shekou

“Back at Mount Blue, I have a routine I recognise: consulting in Shekou, meals at gaga, a facial near Garden City, local massages and a Cantonese weekend lunch at the Hilton. Workouts still take me to other parts of the city, and the car has a place in the budget. I visit Four Seasons in Futian a few times a month, and sometimes leave the car in Luohu to take the train into Hong Kong. There are still forms to keep current and new places to learn, but they no longer fill the whole picture.”

“I review the spending, keep a buffer, put the actual document dates in my calendar and make plans with people I want to see again. I came for a job. I am building a life around it. There is no fixed deadline for feeling at home.”

His decision: keep what works, leave room to explore and make Shekou his base.

Practical notes

  • Review document renewals and changes of address or employment with the responsible office or employer.
  • The personal budget below is an example with explicit assumptions, including a car already bought from savings.
