before the fever.

Shenzhen has extensive public, specialist and international-facing medical care. The stressful part is rarely the lack of a hospital. It is deciding where to go, in which language, with which records and under which payment arrangement while a child is already unwell.

Use a three-level family plan

Shenzhen Government’s municipal list identifies Shenzhen Children’s Hospital as a comprehensive specialist children’s hospital and also lists Shenzhen Maternity and Child Healthcare Hospital and HKU-Shenzhen Hospital. In 2026, the city reported four Shenzhen hospitals in Guangdong’s first international-medical-service pilot group: Shenzhen People’s Hospital, Peking University Shenzhen Hospital, HKU-Shenzhen Hospital and Shenzhen Hospital of Southern Medical University. “International” does not automatically mean every department has paediatric capacity or that your policy will direct-bill; confirm.

Build the child’s portable record

Keep a secure digital copy and a grab-and-go summary. Include:

• full name, date of birth, nationality and passport or identity number;
• allergies and previous severe reactions;
• medical conditions, surgeries and important family history;
• medicine names using generic ingredients where possible, doses and schedule;
• immunisation dates and vaccine names;
• insurance member and assistance numbers;
• two parent or guardian contacts and the school contact;
• home address in Chinese and English.

A Chinese summary of allergies, conditions and medication can remove dangerous ambiguity. Do not rely on an automated translation for a critical medical term without checking it.

Transfer the vaccination history early

Bring the original vaccination record and a clear copy when moving. A Shenzhen Government notice from 2021 states that foreign families could create a child profile and book common vaccines through community health centres, including vaccines in national compulsory and voluntary programmes. That establishes access, but the booking channel and schedule may have changed: ask the chosen community health centre to review the record and explain the current catch-up or documentation process.

Do not assume two countries’ vaccine names and schedules line up perfectly. Ask a qualified clinician which doses are equivalent and what the school currently requires.

Read insurance from the family’s side

The citywide healthcare and insurance guide explains Shenzhen’s public system and social medical insurance. For a family policy, also ask:

• Are outpatient paediatrics, emergency care, inpatient care and prescribed medicines covered?
• Are congenital, chronic, developmental, dental, vision and mental-health needs excluded or limited?
• Is maternity or newborn care included, and after what waiting period?
• Which Shenzhen providers offer current direct billing? Is pre-authorisation required?
• What happens outside the network or in Hong Kong?
• Does each child have a separate deductible, co-pay or annual limit?

Save the insurer’s assistance number and pre-authorisation steps, not just the policy PDF. In a true emergency, seek care first; contact the insurer as soon as reasonably possible.

Prepare the first visit

1. Confirm the serviceAsk whether the department sees children of this age and problem, in the language needed.
2. Check booking and paymentAsk what identity documents, appointment route, deposit and insurance authorisation are required.
3. Bring the short recordSymptoms and timing, medicines already given, allergies, relevant history and vaccination record.
4. Leave with a written planDiagnosis or working diagnosis, medicine ingredients and doses, warning signs, follow-up and where to go if the child worsens.
