Admissions & planning

How public-school places are allocated

Shenzhen’s 2026 compulsory-education policy uses exam-free, local-area admission and district points systems. A profile is a starting point for checking your catchment, not an invitation to apply directly outside the official process.

  • Confirm the exact campus and entry stage: primary Grade 1 (小一) or junior-secondary Grade 1 (初一, equivalent to Grade 7).
  • Use the district’s published application platform, catchment map and annual admissions notice; a familiar school-group name is not enough.
  • Do not pay anyone promising a guaranteed public-school place or an unofficial admissions shortcut.

Eligibility depends on the family’s status

Keep Shenzhen hukou, non-Shenzhen mainland hukou, Hong Kong/Macao, Taiwan and foreign-national cases separate. Longhua’s 2026 notice has different document lists for these groups; its foreign-national section points families toward a school for children of foreign personnel. Do not assume that a residence permit alone establishes public-school eligibility.

  • For a non-Shenzhen mainland-hukou application, check the parent’s applicable hukou/residence-document route and the district’s residence and social-insurance cut-off dates.
  • Hong Kong/Macao applicants and Taiwan applicants have distinct identity, travel/residence and family-document requirements: use the correct annual checklist.
  • Ask the district bureau to confirm any foreign-passport, permanent-residence, mixed-nationality or special-policy case before committing to a lease.

Check the address before renting or buying

An apartment listing described as being near a school is not evidence of admissions eligibility. Futian verifies actual residence and requires housing evidence to match it. Its 2026 junior-secondary guide set rental-registration conditions well before the application window; new arrivals should not assume that signing a lease now satisfies them.

  • Check the official catchment using the precise address and housing code, not just the neighbourhood name.
  • Check whether the home is already locked for another family’s school-place application and whether the landlord must sign an acknowledgement.
  • Ask which housing category, registration history and supporting documents apply; points and accepted evidence are district-specific.

Curriculum, language and the real family budget

These are local compulsory-education schools following the national curriculum, with school-level activities alongside it. Mandarin and standard written Chinese are the basic teaching language under national rules; English as a school subject is not the same as an English-medium programme.

The six linked government profiles list no tuition/miscellaneous-schooling charge and no textbook/miscellaneous-book charge. This does not establish an all-inclusive zero-cost offer: request the current written schedule for meals, uniforms, transport and optional services.

  • Ask about Mandarin support, classroom expectations, home–school communication and any learning-support needs; no English-language support is guaranteed here.
  • Visit the correct campus and rehearse the daily commute. Ask about lunch, collection times and after-school arrangements.

Entry dates, transfers and the next stage

For 2026 Grade 1 entry, Futian’s notice used age six by 31 August 2026. Its normal application window was in June, not an open year-round offer. As of this review on 18 September 2026, the cited summer application periods have passed: ask the bureau about the appropriate next intake or a published transfer route.

Transfers use a separate process and require a vacancy in the right year. Longhua’s autumn 2026 transfer notice generally accepted Shenzhen-hukou applicants, explicitly warned that approval was not guaranteed, and required applications to match the child’s existing grade.

Senior secondary is a separate admissions stage, linked to the city’s examination and placement rules. A junior-secondary place does not itself guarantee admission to a particular senior high school.

  • Keep the child’s existing enrolment until the receiving school and authorities confirm the transfer and student-record arrangements.
  • For a future school year, wait for that year’s official age cut-off, calendar, catchment and document rules rather than copying 2026 dates.

Common questions

Does renting in a school’s area guarantee a place?

No. Address eligibility, actual residence, housing documents, any school-place lock, the verified category/points and available capacity all matter. Get the district’s assessment before relying on an estate agent’s promise.

Can a foreign-national child enrol in any public school?

Do not assume so. Pingshan’s 2026 guide specifically requires a foreign permanent-resident document for its stated route; Longhua’s 2026 foreign-national section instead points to a school for children of foreign personnel. These district provisions are not interchangeable. Ask the bureau responsible for your home address to assess the child’s exact status.

Can we move mid-year or repeat a year to enter?

Use the district’s published transfer process and ask whether the correct grade has a vacancy. Longhua’s cited notice does not permit choosing an inappropriate grade to obtain a place. Its July 2026 window has closed; it is evidence of the process, not a current invitation to apply.
