Shenzhen’s reputation abroad has not caught up with its top end.
About this guide
Twenty of the forty-five here sit above ¥300 a head, and the group includes two Black Pearl diamonds, several one-diamond rooms, and the Shenzhen branches of restaurant groups that made their names in Beijing, Hong Kong and Taizhou. The ceiling is high and it has risen fast.
How this list was chosen
The midpoint of the published per-head range falls above ¥300. Wine pairings are not included in these figures and will frequently double them.
Book earlier than you think
Ensue wants two to three weeks. AVANT is a small room. Duck de Chine roasts to order, so the duck has to be ordered when you book rather than when you sit down. None of this is unusual for the level, but it catches people who are used to walking into ¥200 dinners here.
Hotel rooms versus independents
A useful split at this price. The hotel dining rooms — Shang Palace, China Lodge, The Bay, Ensue, Yun Jing — are the safer choice when you are hosting and cannot afford a surprise. The independents — AVANT, Stone Sal, Voisin Organique, Trois Vies — are where the more interesting cooking is.
The list, cheapest first
Duck de Chine by 1949
The Beijing group's Shenzhen room at OCT Harbour, doing roast duck with genuinely crisp skin and tableside carving. Order the duck when you book — they roast to order and walk-ins often miss out. The rest of the menu is competent but the duck is the point.
Yong Fu Xiao Xian甬府小鲜
Ningbo cooking on level six of MixC World, built around crab — the raw marinated crab cut into eighteen pieces is the signature, along with torched Huadiao chicken. Cold, salt-cured seafood is central to this cuisine, so it is not for everyone; if it suits you it is the best of its kind here.
Lei Garden利苑酒家
The Shenzhen branch of the Hong Kong group, in phase two of the Luohu MixC. Consistency is the selling point — the double-boiled soups and the roast meats are the same standard you would get across the border for less money. Closes between lunch and dinner, so check the hours.
Shang Palace香宫
Second floor of the Shangri-La by the railway station, which makes it the obvious lunch if you have just come through Luohu port. Handmade shrimp dumplings and truffle steamed egg with lobster are the things to order. There is an all-you-can-eat dim sum option at lunch that is genuinely good value.
Bus Grill
Dry-aged beef, roughly twenty to twenty-eight days, seasoned at the table with some theatre. Founded by a chef with a Michelin-kitchen background. A different register from the hotel steakhouses and considerably more fun for a group.
Tian Yu Shui天屿水·茶蔬
Black Pearl-listed vegetarian in the Futian CBD, built around tea and vegetables rather than mock meat. The most credible answer in Shenzhen to the question of where to take a vegetarian guest without apologising. Lunch sets are the good-value entry point.
China Lodge君悦酒店·主席楼·粤府
The Cantonese room at the Grand Hyatt, and a steady Black Pearl fixture. Roast meats and soups are the strength. It is a reliable central Luohu choice when you are hosting people you need to impress but do not want to spend Yun Jing money on.
GreenSide水岸十里·江海时鲜
Jiangnan river-and-sea cooking in the Qianhai MixC — lighter and sweeter than the Cantonese default, with a lot of attention to seasonal fish. Useful to know if you are out in Qianhai, which is otherwise thin on serious tables.
Chi Ching Chiu Choi至正潮菜
Proper Teochew cooking at the serious end — cold marinated crab, braised goose, oyster omelette, and the bitter Fenghuang Dancong tea that goes with it. Order the cold dishes first, as they run out. A good introduction if you have only ever met Teochew food through beef hotpot.
Voisin Organique
A dark, quarry-like room by Various Associates that gets photographed constantly, but the kitchen under Rosetta Lin is the real reason to go — contemporary Chinese cooking built on produce from the restaurant's own certified farm. Lunch runs weekdays only; dinner nightly. Ask for a table away from the entrance if you want to hear each other.
Shan Hai Zuo山海作·中国菜
A recent Black Pearl addition in OCT, cooking across Chinese regional traditions rather than sticking to one. Good middle ground if you want something serious but not the full tasting-menu commitment of Ensue or AVANT. Dinner is the stronger service.
Stone Sal言盐西餐厅
A Black Pearl-listed steakhouse rather than a hotel grill, which makes it unusual here. Go for the beef and keep the sides simple. Quieter than the equivalent rooms in Futian, and easier to book on short notice.
The Bay by Chef Fei东湾
Chef Fei's Shenzhen outpost inside the Mandarin Oriental at UpperHills, drawing on Lingnan and Teochew cooking. Come at lunch for the dim sum, which is where the kitchen's precision shows most clearly and the bill is a good deal softer. A Black Pearl listing and the most reliable hotel Cantonese in Futian.
La Tablée
Small fusion kitchen in the same Shennan Circuit building as AVANT, working French technique over Japanese ingredients. Earned its Black Pearl listing recently. Counter seating, short menu, and easier to get into than its neighbour.
Trois Vies AFFINITÉ三生AFFINITÉ
Creative French cooking inside the Sea World Culture and Arts Centre, with an open kitchen and a wide sweep of sea view. The best fine-dining table in Shekou by some distance, and a rare case where you can make an evening of it with the gallery downstairs. Go at sunset.
Yun Jing云璟
Seventieth floor of Raffles at One Shenzhen Bay, with the bay and Hong Kong laid out below. Ten private rooms, each themed on a gemstone, so this is where local business dinners land. Book a window table at dusk. The cooking is classical Cantonese done properly rather than reinvented, and priced accordingly.
Xin Rong Ji新荣记
The Shenzhen branch of the Taizhou group that has collected stars across China. Seafood-led and seasonal — the menu changes with what has come in, and the staff will steer you. Two entrances, one for the main room and one for private dining. Expensive, but the ingredient quality is not in doubt.
Sei ku晴空·日本料理
Counter Japanese in Shenzhen Bay MixC, Nanshan, and one of the few in the city with a Black Pearl listing. Omakase format, so tell them about any restrictions when you book rather than on the night. Sit at the counter — the table seating misses the point.
Ensue
Top floor of the Futian Shangri-La, run under Christopher Kostow with Guangdong-born head chef Jeff Wu. It is a set tasting menu only, roughly three hours, built on Chinese produce sourced from Shunde, Xinjiang, Dalian and elsewhere. Book two to three weeks out. The wine list runs to several hundred labels and there is a cocktail bar, Alcove, upstairs if you want to keep the evening going.
AVANT
The only Shenzhen restaurant holding two diamonds in the Black Pearl guide, in the Shennan Circuit building at the OCT creative park. Tasting menu, small room, and the most technically ambitious cooking in the city outside Ensue. Worth it if you care about the food more than the view — there isn't one. Reserve well ahead.
