Shenzhen photographs better than it sightsees. One rule above all: check the forecast before you buy a view — on a hazy day you are paying to look at grey.

  The tallest building in Shenzhen, and the one paid view in the city I would still queue for on a clear day. Price and hours both change — check the official channel on the day rather than any figure you have read, mine included, and book through it rather than a reseller.

  The tallest building in the city until Ping An passed it. Forget observation tickets and buy a drink upstairs: same view, better chair. Budget accordingly — a domestic draft in a local place runs ¥5–25 and an expat-bar pint ¥30–60, with craft or imported beer ¥45–70; a room with this view sits above all of them.   The best sunset in the city, facing the water beside Talent Park. Book a window table and go early enough to watch the light change over the bay. Reckon on roughly ¥100–300 a head for food, and more once drinks are involved — estimates as of August 2026.

  The CBD’s standing answer to “where shall we meet”. Shops by day, late bars at the eastern end after work. From about nine on a Friday it is one of the busiest nightlife blocks in the city; on a Tuesday it is nothing at all.

  The small-venue circuit is better than the city’s reputation suggests. B10 in OCT-LOFT is where I look first; MAO Livehouse at Sea World takes the bigger touring names. Search the venue’s Chinese name — listing sites show the calendar but rarely the ticket link.

  The standard answer to August, and an underrated afternoon. IMAX, 4DX and VIP halls add around ¥30–120 on top — estimates as of August 2026. Book through Taopiaopiao or Maoyan rather than at the counter; nobody local pays the window price.
