There is no single “best” international school in Shenzhen. There is a best realistic fit for this child, this exit point, this budget and this commute—and the shortlist becomes much clearer when you ask those questions in order.

1. Confirm who the school may enrol

Start with the child’s documents, not a league table. Schools licensed for children of foreign personnel have eligibility conditions; individual schools publish the passports or permits they accept, and the exact position can differ. Shenzhen Government maintains an international-schools directory, but admissions offices are the source for current places and your family’s eligibility.

Ask in writing: “With these exact documents, is my child eligible for this campus and year group?” Do that before an application fee or tour. QSI’s current admissions page, for example, lists foreign passports with a valid China visa and certain Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan documents; Harrow Shenzhen publishes a different eligibility FAQ. Those are examples of why the school—not a generic guide—must confirm.

2. Choose for the next transition

A curriculum is a route, not a badge. If the family expects another move in two years, continuity with the next system may matter most. If the child will graduate in Shenzhen, look closely at the final qualification, subject range and university-counselling structure. Shenzhen schools offer combinations of IB, British, American/AP, Canadian and bilingual pathways; the site’s schools orientation explains the broad differences.

Ask what happens in the child’s actual year group, not what the school offers somewhere on the campus. How many Mandarin hours are timetabled? At what level? Which qualification is available at the intended exit? How easy is it to change pathway later?

3. Test support before testing the child

Share relevant learning, language, medical and wellbeing information early. Ask who delivers English-language support, learning support and counselling; how many specialists cover how many pupils; and what happens if needs increase. An attractive campus cannot compensate for a support model that does not fit.

Ask to see an ordinary lesson, library, lunch, outdoor break and the transition between classes. The reusable school-tour scorecard keeps every visit comparable.

4. Price the complete year

Tuition is only the headline. Request the current written fee schedule and mark every compulsory or probable line: application and registration, capital or development fee, meals, bus, uniform, devices, trips, examinations, activities, deposits, late-payment terms and refund rules. Confirm what happens if a visa, relocation or withdrawal changes the plan.

5. Run the commute at school-run time

Many international choices cluster in Shekou and western Nanshan; Harrow is in Qianhai, while other campuses sit in different parts of the city. A map understates bridge traffic, pickups and the child’s actual bus day. Test home-to-gate on a normal weekday at the time the family would travel.

Ask the school for the current route and pickup window before signing a lease. A nominally shorter journey can be worse if a young child is first on and last off. Compare the family bases in Family neighbourhoods, then use the 72-hour neighbourhood test.
