Pack it, ship it, or buy it again?

A relocation shipment can become expensive storage wrapped in industrial plastic and optimism. Make every item earn the journey: it must keep your first weeks functioning, preserve something genuinely hard to replace, or justify its shipping cost and clearance risk. “But we have always owned it” is not a fourth category.

Meet your three piles—and one suspicious corner

Carry what the move stops working without. Ship what has high personal or replacement value and can tolerate delay. Buy again what is bulky, standard and easy to find locally. Then create a fourth holding pile—check first—for medicine, food, plants, animal products, batteries, radio equipment and anything else that may be restricted.

Decide item by item, not room by room. “Kitchen” is not a decision; it is where decisions go to hide. A child’s familiar cup may earn suitcase space. A full set of ordinary plates probably does not. A specialist tool may be hard to replace; a generic desk chair is rarely worth an intercontinental voyage.

Make checked luggage cover two weeks—not four climates

Prioritise fit, continuity and weather. Bring clothing or footwear that is consistently difficult for you to replace, but do not move an entire four-season wardrobe into a subtropical city. Shenzhen will not award points for importing six winter coats. Pack enough ordinary clothing to function while laundry, payments and delivery apps are still unfamiliar.

For children, the best luggage is often emotional rather than expensive: a familiar bedtime object, school essentials and a small piece of the old room. Those reduce disruption immediately. Most generic household basics can arrive by same-day or next-day delivery once local payment works. The favourite teddy, annoyingly, has no exact local substitute.

Do not ship to an imaginary apartment

A shipment makes sense when you have a stable delivery address, a complete inventory, a carrier that can explain Chinese clearance and a plan for delay or storage. Ask who is the importer of record, which documents are required, what happens if the shipment arrives before you can receive it, and which costs have performed a vanishing act from the quote.

Unaccompanied baggage has its own declaration consequences. Labelling a container “personal effects” does not end the Customs question with a flourish. Chinese rules use concepts such as personal use and reasonable quantity; those are Customs judgments, not loopholes. Keep an honest itemised inventory and proof of value where useful.

Let Shenzhen replace the bulky basics

Bulky standard furniture, basic kitchenware, ordinary bedding, cleaning supplies and common small appliances are usually easier to buy in Shenzhen. Check voltage and plug requirements before bringing an appliance: an adapter changes the plug shape, not the electrical characteristics. It is a translator, not a wizard.

Replacement makes even more sense while the permanent apartment is unknown. A sofa that fits a house abroad may become an elegant lift blocker in Shenzhen. A large bed frame may not suit the room. Buy after measuring the actual door, lift and floor plan—ideally twice.

Medicine, food and batteries: no guessing

There is no responsible universal “safe medicine list.” Check the exact active ingredient, quantity, prescription evidence, Customs position, and airline rules. Keep essential medicine in original packaging and in the bag that stays with you, subject to security requirements. If continuity of treatment matters, also identify a Shenzhen hospital or clinic before departure through the healthcare guide.

Plants, seeds, animal products and food can trigger quarantine or import restrictions. Do not rely on a forum post about a different product or entry point, even if it contains seventeen exclamation marks. Power banks and spare lithium batteries are governed by aviation-safety rules as well as Customs; check the operating airline immediately before each flight, including connections.

Make the spreadsheet the bad cop

Add replacement cost, sentimental cost, freight share, proof needed and restriction check to your sheet. When the “ship” price approaches the local replacement price, let the spreadsheet be ruthless unless the item is genuinely irreplaceable.

Buy locally in the right order

Arrival purchases become much easier after a mainland number and a working wallet. Start with the SIM, then WeChat and Alipay, then a two-week layer of household essentials. Delay major furniture until the lease, measurements and delivery access are certain. First payment tools, then pillows, then the heroic sectional sofa.
