A Shenzhen job offer: the questions to settle before you accept
Check the actual employer, work-permit plan, pay, benefits and daily working arrangements behind an English-friendly vacancy.

THE USEFUL PART
What to take away
- English in a vacancy does not confirm foreign-passport eligibility or sponsorship.
- Match the offer, employer, work location and actual permit application.
- Compare pay and benefits using written conditions and realistic cash-flow dates.
Read past the language requirement
A vacancy can require English because its customers, research partners or reporting team use it. That does not automatically mean the employer can recruit a foreign national for the role, or that it will support your particular work-permit application. Ask that question early, before investing in document preparation or making commitments based on a promising interview.
Search by the work you can demonstrate, as well as the language you speak. Useful searches might combine your specialism with international sales, engineering, research, operations or education. Read the actual job description and required qualifications. An ‘international’ title can cover very different responsibilities, and a foreign-language skill is strongest when it connects to the business’s real needs.
Identify the employer and the workplace
Ask for the legal employer’s full name, the team you will join and the normal workplace address. Establish whether a recruiter is introducing you, an agency would employ you, or another company would host the daily work. Have the employer explain the arrangement clearly. Use its official careers or company contact route to verify an offer if the communication is unfamiliar.
Shenzhen’s official work-permit service identifies employers as the applicants and sets requirements for employment documents, including information about work, pay and duration. Ask HR to explain how the written offer and proposed contract match the actual application. The advertised company brand, the name on a contract and the intended work location should not be left as three unrelated pieces of information.

Turn sponsorship into a sequence of actions
Request a named HR contact, a document checklist for your circumstances and a clear sequence for the relevant approvals. Ask which tasks happen before travel, which require you to be present, who pays the documented costs and what information the employer still needs to assess. The official service requirements are a reference for that discussion; they do not guarantee any individual application’s outcome.
Confirm when you may lawfully begin the actual work with the responsible authority and employer. Do not assume an exploratory visit, an existing permission to stay, or an informal trial arrangement answers that question. If a plan depends on an exception or a change of status, resolve the details through the appropriate official route before arranging a start date around it.

Compare the whole package in writing
Clarify base salary, currency, pay date, bonus conditions and whether the figure is gross or a documented net-pay commitment. Request an understandable payroll illustration for your circumstances. Ask about any probation-related difference, reimbursable expenses and the evidence required for claims. A large possible bonus should remain separate from the amount you can depend on for monthly commitments.
For housing, medical cover, flights, relocation support or school-related benefits, write down what is provided, the cap, the conditions and the payment date. An advance, an allowance and a reimbursement solve different cash-flow problems. If an employer describes insurance, obtain the actual plan details and confirm how the people in your household would use it.
Describe the week you are agreeing to
Ask about normal hours, reporting lines, travel, the use of English and Chinese, and how the team works with colleagues in other time zones. Find out where meetings happen and how often you would visit other sites. If remote work or flexible hours matter to the decision, get a concrete explanation of what is expected instead of relying on a broad phrase in a recruitment conversation.
For a teaching role, distinguish classroom time from preparation, meetings, supervision and other duties. For a commercial or technical role, distinguish the office base from regular customer or production-site travel. Use those details to test a realistic commute and family routine. The same salary can support very different lives under different working patterns.
Keep a short acceptance checklist
Before accepting, assemble the final offer, contract terms, employer identity, permit plan, benefits conditions and proposed start date in one place. Mark what is confirmed and what remains conditional. If an important promise appears only in a message, ask how it will be recorded in the final documents. Obtain qualified advice where you do not understand a material contractual term.
Build your first 90-day cash plan around confirmed payment dates and arrange housing with the remaining uncertainty in mind. Keep copies of documents and communications securely. A well-prepared acceptance should leave both sides with the same understanding of the job, the steps required to start it and the daily life you are moving to Shenzhen to build.
