Hong Kong can be an access route for eligible investors; it is not a workaround for residence or funding rules. Living in Shenzhen does not give everyone the same account options.
Account eligibility
Can the actual broker entity accept your real residence, identity documents and tax status? A bank account and a securities account are different products.
Lawful funding
Can your particular source of funds be transferred and accepted? Ask both the sending bank and the broker; approval from one does not answer the other.
Market permission
Does the account permit the exact US-listed share you want? Confirm exchange, share class, settlement currency, order types and charges.
Eligibility & money movement
Use your actual circumstances
Nationality, legal residence, tax residence and foreign-exchange classification are not interchangeable. Provide genuine identity, current residential-address and source-of-funds evidence. Never borrow an address, identity or another person’s FX quota.
The ordinary personal FX-purchase route cannot be used to fund overseas securities investment. Qualified channels have their own rules. Foreign nationals’ documented lawful-income remittances involve separate checks; do not generalize this quota to every Shenzhen resident.
Stop before transferring if eligibility or lawful funding is unclear. Ask the bank or broker for the applicable requirements in writing, and obtain qualified cross-border advice where needed. Same-name transfers alone do not make a transaction lawful.
Broker documentation to compare
Two examples with official information, not rankings or endorsements. Current acceptance and ASTS availability must be confirmed for your exact account.
HSBC Hong Kong
An integrated bank account is only a starting requirement. HSBC’s investment opening checklist includes address evidence and a Mainland Investors declaration where applicable. That declaration requires lawful funds from outside mainland China and eligible own-name settlement accounts. Its published US-stock service is for non-US persons.
The PRC documentation page is not a guarantee of current onboarding. Confirm eligibility and the contracting entity directly: using the Hong Kong website does not mean your account is held with the Hong Kong entity. Additional residence, work or funding evidence may be requested. Third-party deposits are generally rejected.
For a Hong Kong intermediary, search the SFC register for the exact entity, activities and licence conditions; banks can be registered institutions. If your contract is with an entity elsewhere, check its actual regulator and client-asset protections. Licensing is not a guarantee against investment losses.
FX spread and conversion commission; sending/intermediary-bank charges; accepted same-name accounts and currencies.
Ownership & protection
Which entity holds your assets, how cash and securities are safeguarded, and which compensation scheme actually applies.

W-8BEN or W-9? Status decides.
W-8BEN generally documents an eligible non-US individual’s foreign status. US citizens and other US persons generally use W-9, even when living in Shenzhen. Do not choose a form to fit a broker’s eligibility rules.
Keep trade, dividend, withholding, FX and transfer records. Ask a qualified adviser about all relevant tax residencies, reporting, treaty eligibility and estate-tax exposure. A Hong Kong account does not make US shares tax-free.
Common questions
Can I buy ASTS through Stock Connect?
Not directly. ASTS is a Nasdaq-listed Class A share quoted in USD. Stock Connect covers eligible mainland and Hong Kong-listed securities, not Nasdaq shares. A broker offering US markets is a separate route, subject to eligibility and lawful funding.
